3 Ways You Can Help Victims of the West, TX, Explosion

Donating blood is how you can help the victims of the West, TX explosion As you all know by now, the small community of West, TX, located 20 miles north of Waco, experienced a horrible tragedy last night after a massive fertilizer plant explosion.

According to the latest news, the casualties could be anywhere between 5-15 people with more than 160 injured. Hospitals in North Texas are receiving some of these patients, and our own Baylor Medical Center at Waxahachie received three people who sustained injuries.

Firefighters, EMS personnel, and local volunteers are mobilizing to help with search and rescue efforts right now, and many people are wondering how they can help too.

If you would like to lend a helping hand, here are three ways you can contribute:

1.  GIVE BLOOD

As of now, blood donations are desperately needed to replace the blood supply that is being send to West, TX. Donating blood is a safe and relatively quick process. Blood centers are always in need of more donations and you could actually help save someone’s life by doing this.

To find a blood donation center closest to you, visit Carter BloodCare’s website. to learn more about blood donation process, click here.

2.  DONATE SUPPLIES

If you live in the North Texas area, you can deliver two-gallon Ziploc bags filled with toiletry items to Baylor’s Faith In Action Second Life Resource warehouse located on the Baylor Dallas campus at 310 N. Walton St. close to the DART station.

You can also consult your local Baylor hospital’s pastoral care office to find a drop off spot in your community.

To find a Baylor hospital near you, visit BaylorHealth.com. Please deliver your items by Wednesday, April 24. The Faith In Action team will be delivering these hygiene kits to the West community in the coming days.

3.  SPREAD THE WORD

Many organizations are posting lists of resources to help the community of West including local North Texas television stations.

You can find those here: WFAA-Channel 8 (ABC affiliate), KTVT-Channel 11 (CBS affiliate), KXAS-Channel 5 (NBC affiliate). Fox 4 also posted a running list of items needed for donation on their page on Facebook this morning. KERA radio offered a helpful article on its website with a regularly updated list of ways to help.

These lists also include the phone numbers to local hospitals and a link to the Red Cross Safe and Well Listings if you are looking for loved ones who may have been affected. Share this blog post or these lists of resources through your social media channels to let people know how they can help.

We will update this post as we learn more.

The mayor of West said they will need monetary donations to replace expensive items like rescue vehicles and that next week, after the residents can go back to their homes and check out their personal situations, the city will know better what people need most. So… keep checking!
