When it comes to digital health, embrace the art of possible

Following a big year of technology disruption in 2015, Nick Reddy, Chief Digital Officer (CDO) and Senior Vice President of Information Services for Baylor Scott & White Health, weighs in on the digital business transformation taking place within the Texas-based healthcare organization today.

“What got you here won’t get you there,” Reddy said. “The future will be very different than the past. The rules of the game are different.”

In his role as Baylor Scott & White’s Chief Digital Officer, Reddy’s focus is on modernizing consumer journeys to increase convenience through more real-time, self-service interactions. He connects the dots between impactful digital initiatives to add value where the rest of the organization doesn’t see or understand the opportunity.

“Most progressive leaders of business have gone through an internal thought-process at the ‘art of possible,'” Reddy said. “Most people understand the potential of digital. They understand the competitive threat of digital, and where they are now is trying to establish concrete plans to move through those journeys within their organizations.”

So how do you embrace the digital revolution and rationalize these investments? According to Reddy, a lot of learning, a lot of experimentation, a lot of pilot projects and a lot of bets.

“The intention is not to just experiment. The intention is to experiment and scale to transform the business.”

Reddy’s willingness to pursue ideas allows Baylor Scott & White Health the opportunity for intentional experimentation, to roll the dice on projects that have a chance to benefit the business through increased growth, convenience or efficiencies.

But with that boldness comes a healthy amount of fear.

“If you don’t do it, someone else will. Your core business can either be driven by yourself, or it can be driven by someone else in the marketplace. Not dealing with it doesn’t protect you. It exposes you more because you’re less educated, and you’re more exposed to comparative forces.”

Digital transformation in health care presents opportunities to problem solve through a different lens.

“The future vision is going to continue to change, primarily because of the dynamic nature of the marketplace,” Reddy said. “The projects we are piloting are allowing us to convince, in most cases, a refutability that doing business a different way could be economical and could work in the digital world.”
