April is National Donate Life Month and I believe the greatest gifts one can give is organ donation. One donor can have an impact on up to 50 people! 50 lives saved.
I speak from experience. Back in 2003/2004 I was diagnosed with liver cancer as a Scott & White patient. After two cancer surgeries the prognosis was very guarded for my recovery. Scott & White sent me to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas for a “transplant evaluation”. The transplant team determined I was eligible for the transplant list and because of a number of factors I was placed on top of the list with my size and blood type.
September 2004 I received the liver of a 61 year old female who unfortunately had passed away. My feelings and emotions were all over the place but as I awoke my first thought was on my donor and her family. Since that time I have been a volunteer for the Southwest Transplant Alliance to get the word out how important being an organ donor is.
To this day I think about my donor and I know if not for her, my God and the doctors at Scott & White and Baylor I would not be celebrating my first Easter with my 3 month old granddaughter. May God Bless and remember Organ Donors make Better Livers!
