Pediatric care takes flight due to local company

landon-150x150Holly Orsag did everything she could to prepare for a healthy delivery of her baby boy in 2007. When Landon arrived, however, he was 14 weeks early and weighed just 30 ounces. It was critical that he be immediately transferred from the hospital where he was born to the Children’s Hospital at Scott & White, where he could receive the expert care he so desperately needed from the staff of pediatric specialists.

Time was of the essence. Shortly following his birth, Landon developed life-threatening pulmonary emphysema, due to his underdeveloped lungs. The neonatal transport team from Scott & White arrived via helicopter and sprung into action, administering life-saving assistance to Landon. Using specially-designed equipment within the helicopter, including a controlled airborne incubator (isolette) and a high-frequency ventilator, the transport team was able to pump air into the tiny newborn’s frail lungs, giving him a fighting chance. When Landon and the team landed at Children’s Hospital, it marked  the first day of a three-month stay in Scott & White’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Landon was the first child to benefit from the equipment, and is alive today because of the generosity of the McLane Company, which donated the funds to make the purchase possible. Now, four years later, hundreds of lives have been saved, and Landon has blossomed into a healthy, talkative all-American boy who loves playing baseball and plowing his imaginary fields while playing outside with his tractors.

landon2-150x150“When you see all the technology that is used to help your child, it’s just unreal. But technology saves lives, and Landon is a living, breathing testament to that,” his mother says.

The combination of pediatric experts and state-of-the-art technology helps make miracles happen. Scott & White is grateful to the McLane Company for taking the lead in ensuring the most fragile patients get the most advanced care. The McLane Company NICU at Scott & White ranks among the top three percent nationwide for survival rates. The company has also donated a majority of the funds needed to equip a dedicated pediatric ambulance, as well as additional funding to puchase transport infusion smart pumps. Because of the McLane Company’s passion for kids and belief in Scott & White, the hospital’s pediatric specialists have been able to reach out and care for more children than ever before.
