I am always impressed with the spirit of giving that the holiday season can inspire. There’s just something about this time of year that reminds us that showing kindness to a stranger is more of a gift to the giver than to the receiver.
Unfortunately, in most cases, that spirit of giving doesn’t necessarily translate into increased blood donations. In fact, with all of the distractions and diversions of this very busy season, many regular donors bypass their normal blood donations for holiday festivities.
To compound the problem, while the supply of blood historically decreases, the need for blood increases over the holidays. With the increase in travel and hazardous winter road conditions, accidents and trauma cases put a strain on blood levels. The need for blood never takes a break.
As we head into next week and reflect on the blessings we have received this year, remember that spirit of giving and the kindness to strangers. That hour of your time has the power to save up to three lives. Ask anyone who has ever received blood. They’ll tell you it’s the best gift they’ve ever received.
Additionally, donating at Scott & White marks you as a Hometown Hero and ensures all donations remain in our community to directly benefit our friends and neighbors. We never ship our blood donations outside Central Texas as other blood centers often do.
